Your air conditioner is one of your most important household items during a hot summer. But it is rather common for the A/C to be out of mind for most homeowners or at least until the moment something goes wrong. If you don't want your family to have to suffer through a few rough days with no A/C while waiting for a local air conditioning services expert to make a house call, here are a few things you definitely want to avoid.
Changing the Temperature Frequently
In short, pick a temperature and stick with it, at least while you are in the house. Sure, you can raise the temp a bit if you are going to be at work all day, but just keep in mind that once an air conditioner reaches the desired temperature, it can likely switch to economy mode and reduce the amount of time that it is always on. If you get into a bad habit of lowering the temperature every time you see the weather outside has gone higher, you're just going to be making your air conditioner work much harder than it should have to and for a minimum benefit.
Never Cleaning It
Air conditioners collect dust over time, no matter how good your air filter is. Even if you are smart enough to know to change your air filter on a frequent basis, that doesn't mean you can just ignore everything else inside the unit. The condenser coils especially should be cleaned on a semi-frequent basis as this is the part of the A/C that actually keeps you cool. Let this area fall into a state of disrepair, and your A/C will run much less effective if not break down altogether.
Failing to Schedule Professional Maintenance
For best results when it comes to your air conditioner, you should get a professional contractor out to the house at least once a year to give your air conditioner a full inspection. The ideal season to do so would be the springtime before the warmest weather comes along, but you can do it in the middle of the summer too if you've been lazy. A good HVAC professional will be able to optimize your A/C and fix potential problems before they end up costing you money.
This summer with your air conditioner, don't repeatedly change the temperature more often than you need to, keep the unit as clean as possible and get a professional inspection at least once per year.
